In May of 2015 Dave Kerner officially filed to run for Palm Beach County Commission District 3.
Dave Kerner was born and raised in Lake Worth, Florida as the son of the deputy chief of Lake Worth Police. After graduating from Suncoast Community High School, Dave went to the University of Florida for his Bachelor’s Degree and later for law school. Palm Beach County has always been Dave’s home and he moved back after graduation.
In 2012, at the age of twenty-eight, Dave Kerner was elected by nearly 70% of the voters to represent the 87th legislative district. He was subsequently reelected in 2014. In the Florida House of Representatives, Dave is the Ranking Member of the Judiciary Committee and sits on the Criminal Justice Subcommittee, and the Justice Appropriations Subcommittee. Dave is the recipient of sixteen legislative awards, including three-time Sheriff’s Association Legislative Award, Florida Bar Legislative Award, Junior League Legislator of the Year Award, Statewide Democrat of the Year Award, and Women’s Political Caucus Legislative Award. In his two terms in the legislature, Rep. Kerner has emerged as one of the most effective law makers in Florida, passing fourteen bills into law and always keeping his promise to work across the aisle with civility and respect.
Dave’s civic interest began in middle school, where he served as the student body president. During his time at the University of Florida, Dave enlisted in the Police Academy and eventually served as a Police Officer with the City of Alachua, a job he maintained while studying full-time. In 2006, he was named Police Officer of the Year by the Alachua Police Department and the Alachua Chamber of Commerce, becoming the youngest officer to win that award.
During law school at the University of Florida, Dave served on the Gainesville Board of Adjustments and the Alachua County Environmental Protection Board. Dave was also elected the Student Body Vice-President (Law College Council), was the principal author of the current student body constitution, and was eventually appointed Chief Justice of the University of Florida Supreme Court; the highest judicial office that can be held by a student within the 50,000 person student body.Upon graduation, Dave returned to Palm Beach County to practice civil law and was one of six private civil litigators to be selected by the State Attorney to serve Palm Beach County as a Special Assistant State Attorney.
Dave Kerner focuses his legal practice in all phases of civil litigation for serious motor vehicle accidents, wrongful death cases, and class action prosecutions. He still serves as a volunteer police officer today for the Department of Environmental Protection. Professionally, Dave was recognized as a “Top 20 Under 30” Alumnus of the University of Florida, a Northwestern Mutual “Up and Comer” in the State of Florida in the area of Government, and a top “40 Under 40” Civil Trial Attorney in the area of Personal Injury Litigation.
When he is not volunteering, Dave enjoys spending time on the Loxahatchee River and being with his family, friends, and his three godsons. Dave and his high school sweet heart Jackie were recently married and live in Palm Beach County.
Dave Kerner has a demonstrated record of service to his community. His life experiences have taught him to be a leader that fights for those who cannot fight for themselves. Dave is passionate about public service and always puts the needs of our residents, families and neighborhoods first.
